Do I really need a mobile friendly website?

Here are some StatCounter stats about ways that people are viewing some of my websites, based on the last 500 visits. While we tend to think we need to move quickly to the next biggest thing because it's always flashing across our TV screen and other people are freaking out about it, we're better served by analyzing the hard data of what's actually happening:

From AnneRuthmann.com - audience is generally people interested in hiring me.
Browser Statistics

From My Blog - audience is mostly people who find me via google searches, and through referring links from other websites.

From PhotoLovecat.com - audience is mostly photographers and people searching through google.

My guess is that the few iPhone and Android user hits I get, may actually be other photographers, rather than clients doing their photographer shopping on their cell phone. That doesn't mean I don't plan to pursue a non-flash version of my site in the future, but that I'm not over-eager to make major changes right now while the market is still young and mobile views are still quite low in comparison. If I see the mobile device figures jump to 10%- you bet your butt I'm switching. My guess is that by then, there may be an even newer technology which allows flash to be viewed on mobile devices, or creates an entirely new platform. Is this helpful to you? Do you ever notice what people are really using to view your website?

  1. I've had a client that is an iPhone / iPad developer, so the fact that my blog is mobile friendly was a big thing to them. I'll be switching my site over within the next month or two - there are plenty of HTML5 options out there now, so once I find the one that is the right fit for me I'll be setting it up!

Interesting to look though - overall, 1.68% of my blog visitors are on iPhone, with about 0.2% on the iPad.

  3. To introduce myself, I am the owner of Naze Design and we specialize in CMS web development. In my opinion, you have a low number of i-anythings to really justify the cost of converting to a Mobile optimized website. However, you are currently suffering a big hit in SEO which is even more problematic. Flash doesn't provide anything for Google, Yahoo or Bing to index and looking at your coding it's not really giving much either. An SEO update would be the only good justification for a redesign or rebuild. But even then there are small and cheaper things you can do to optimize a Flash site for Search Engines with out having to do a complete redesign.

    Ps. Great blog!

  4. You are correct if you don't have a digital presence you will get left behind. Flash does not work on all smartphones. We can thank Iphone for that but they thought they could rule the world but will be rolling out flash next year.

We provide website designs that reach all media formats.

  5. I have an android and its already flash friendly. That movement is coming so switching to a non flash site would be pointless at this time frame since the flash ability on most if not all phones is just right around the corner.

  7. Could it also be a "Chicken/Egg" thing... if your site isn't friendly to mobile phones, why would they come back or stick around in the first place?

  8. I surf through Safari on my iPad - many people bought iPads and one of my couples used it to find me and look at my site often. Does this list show iPad - or is that lumped in Safari since that is the browser I use on it?

  9. This is the first view to this website and this is the very first post I am reading...Thank you so much for posting this information :) I have been debating for about 2 months now if I want to switch my host site to incorporate HTML (for iphone users) but like you say, the hard core data shows not many ppl are viewing my site via their phones loL I think I'll leave my site as is for now :)

  10. One of the comments above was saying they already have a flash enabled mobile device. I didn't realize that they had released one yet.

The next cell phone upgrade I get, that will be the primary thing I'm looking for. So maybe keeping the website as a flash site will save some money.
